NEW: Covid-19 transmissions hit record highs

Close to 2 070 new coronavirus cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours, representing a daily record in transmissions.

Thirty-four deaths were also reported in the same period.

Zimbabwe is currently in the throes of a third wave of the pandemic, with weekly rolling average of new cases rising to 1 430 on Wednesday, up from 1 347 a day earlier.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care’s daily situational report, 2 264 people tested positive for Covid-19 yesterday, the first time over 2 000 new cases have been reported in a day since the first case was recorded in March last year.

Overall, the cumulative number of Covid-19 cases has since risen to 60 227, while deaths stand at 1973.
