Imagine being stuck in a traffic jam along Samora Machel Avenue in Harare after a hard and long day at work and the sun beating down on your car.
All you want is to get home as soon as possible and relax with your family, but alas, the traffic jam has other ideas.
The vehicles are moving at a snail’s pace, making it feel like it will take ages for you to get home. As you wait in the jam, boredom and frustration occupy your mind.
This is the daily reality for most Harare motorists, especially during peak times.
However, amidst this chaos and hullabaloo that sometimes leads to cars locking up at some intersections, there is one traffic officer who caught my eye.
He has used creativity to execute his duties.
When directing traffic at these jam-packed intersections, he employs theatrical moves that make the wait in the jam more bearable.
Most motorists find themselves smiling, laughing and eagerly waiting for their turn to pass through the intersection he is manning. Judging from other motorists’ reactions, this service is something worth writing about!
The traffic officer as a service provider
Typically, traffic control is a task that involves standing for long hours, dealing with impatient drivers, and managing the flow of vehicles under challenging conditions.
It is a role that can easily become monotonous and stressful. However, this particular officer has chosen to infuse his work with creativity and joy, making a significant impact on those he serve.
Turning frustration into enjoyment
Executing duties in such an environment may not be pleasant for either party. Instead of the usual hand signals, the officer creatively adds flair through body language, dances and facial expressions.
His body language is on point, offering motorists a bit of free entertainment on the road.
This transformation is a powerful example of how a service provider’s attitude and approach can influence the customer’s experience.
By bringing his personality and passion into his work, he has created a positive and memorable interaction for motorists.
Lesson for anyone in a customer-facing role – the way you perform your duties can significantly impact how customers perceive and experience your service.
The power of enjoying your work
One of the most striking aspects of the theatrical traffic officer’s approach is the evident enjoyment he derives from his work.
This enjoyment is contagious, spreading to the motorists and creating a ripple effect of positivity.
When a service provider genuinely enjoys their job, it shows in their actions, demeanour, and interactions with customers.
This enthusiasm can enhance the overall service experience, making it more engaging and satisfying for the customer.
In customer service, employees who are passionate about their work are more likely to go above and beyond to meet and exceed customer expectations.
They are more attentive, empathetic, and proactive in addressing customer needs. This level of dedication and enthusiasm can turn a routine service interaction into a memorable and delightful experience.
Creating memorable customer experiences
The dancing traffic officer’s performance is not just about entertainment, it is about creating a memorable experience for the motorists.
Memorable experiences are crucial for building customer loyalty and satisfaction. Customers are more likely to repeat and refer others.
To create such experiences, service providers need to focus on understanding and addressing the unique needs and preferences of each customer.
They must put themselves in the customer’s shoes and respond with genuine care and concern. More so, they should find innovative ways to enhance the service experience, just as the traffic officer has done.
Lessons for customer service professionals
There are several valuable lessons for customer service professionals from this officer’s work ethic.

- Find joy in your work: Discover what you love about your job and let that passion shine through. Your enjoyment will positively impact your interaction with customers

This officer’s way of executing his duties is a shining example of how a positive attitude and a passion for one’s work can transform the customer experience.
By infusing his duties with creativity and joy, he has turned a potentially frustrating situation into an enjoyable and memorable one for motorists.
To client-facing employees, embrace your unique qualities, find joy in your work, and strive to create positive and memorable experiences for your customers.
In doing so, you can turn routine, tedious interactions into moments of delight and build lasting customer loyalty.
