NEW: ‘Enough basic commodities for holidays’

THERE will be adequate supplies of basic commodities for the festive season, the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) and the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) have said.

The festive season tends to be accompanied by a spike in demand for food and other commodities.

Said GMAZ chairman, Mr Tafadzwa Musarara:

“We are pleased to inform our consuming public that there are more than enough supplies of maize-meal, bread, flour, self-rising flour, rice, salt, sugar beans and stock-feeds.

“We urge consumers to buy as much as they want, but avoid panic-buying,” he said.

GMAZ is an apex representative body of 114 millers across Zimbabwe.

Retailers have backed GMAZ on the issue of adequate basic food supplies.

“We are currently working with suppliers of key basic commodities like rice, sugar, mealie-meal, salt, cooking oil, meat products and poultry products,” said CZR president, Mr Denford Mutashu.

“We are quite aware that there are some challenges in the value chain, but we appeal to our manufacturers and suppliers to ensure that supplies are not interrupted, and also that pricing remains stable.”
