THE Government has secured a new learning site for Globe and Phoenix primary school which collapsed as a result of illegal mining activities happening underneath the facility.

Fourteen out of the 1500 learners at the school were injured.

Speaking during a post-Cabinet-briefing with members of the media on Tuesday, Information, Publicity, and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said staff and learners will be temporarily moved to Sally Mugabe primary school grounds where tents have been pitched.

“The Department of Civil Protection ensured that all affected learners were assisted accordingly, and all learning activities at the school were suspended for two days,” she said.

“The Government has provided tents and set up temporary classrooms at Sally Mugabe (formerly Russel primary school) grounds to accommodate the 1 500 learners.

“In addition, funds have been released for drone mapping and a geological survey for Kwekwe City Council in order to ensure the safety of all citizens and businesses.”

Geotechnical surveys will be conducted for all mining towns and communities facing similar situations.
