Goromonzi’s fisheries sector received a significant boost with the distribution of over 10,000 fingerlings to local cooperatives, while 78 community members graduated under the Presidential Community Fisheries Scheme, marking a dual achievement in economic empowerment and rural development.
Graduants were pulled from five cooperative groups namely Blue Land, Royal Eagles, Royal Miracles, Manake, and Faranyaharaka.
Speaking at the graduation and dam stocking ceremony in Goromonzi on Wednesday, Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development Deputy Minister Davis Marapira said the government is now moving to curb illegal fishing and over-harvesting.
“To all the traditional leaders present I commend your initiative. The development of your villages starts with you, and you will not need external management of your resources,” he said.
“I also encourage the inclusion of people living with disabilities and orphans in these efforts to foster community development and inclusivity.”
The Deputy Minister commented on the issue of poaching further.
“Theft and poaching remain rampant in our dams, and tireless efforts are being made to promote sustainable fishing and responsible practices,” he said.
