IN RESPONSE to the increasing drug and substance abuse, all local authorities have been given a deadline to identify and provide suitable stand-alone drug treatment and rehabilitation centres.
A letter dated March 9, 2024 from the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) urges local authorities to identify and submit the selected facilities by the end of this month.
This decision follows a directive from Cabinet, which assigned relevant Government ministries to oversee the establishment of stand-alone drug rehabilitation centres nationwide.
“In pursuit of the Cabinet decision, all local authorities are directed to identify and avail suitable facilities for this noble cause.
“The physical setup of the building should have space for a reception, consultation room, counselling room, nurses’ station, lounge, kitchen, games activity room, at least a bedroom and two functional toilets, bathrooms, water source, outdoor sitting area, group therapy area and open ground for sports.
“Given the foregoing, you are kindly requested to submit your identified facilities by March 31 2024,” reads part of the letter.
In January, Parliamentarians expressed serious concern about the drug and substance abuse situation in the country and recommended that Government through the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works facilitate the establishment of rehabilitation centres countrywide to assist drug addicts.
