GOVERNMENT will continue engaging relevant stakeholders to ensure the maximum safety of journalists, Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Mr Nick Mangwana said on Tuesday.
In a speech read on his behalf at the United Nations-Government joint brief with the Zimbabwe National Editors Forum, Mr Mangwana said the authorities will ensure that journalists cover elections without intimidation. “The Second Republic is strengthening the safety of journalists in Zimbabwe. The Government will continue working with stakeholders in this area to make sure no journalist is attacked, maimed or killed for doing their work,” he said.
“As we move into the 2023 harmonised elections, the Second Republic is calling on all of us to ensure that journalists cover the elections without being subjected to intimidation, harassment, threats and other forms of violence.”
United Nations (UN) resident and humanitarian coordinator, Mr Edward Kallon, urged the media to report on developmental issues.
“I call upon you the media fraternity, particularly as editors, to enhance your participation and engagement in Zimbabwe’s development process, and mobilise the people to participate in development discourse,” said Mr Kallon.
The event was part of the 77th anniversary of the UN, which is running under the theme “A watershed moment – Transformative solutions to interlocking challenges.”
