TINEYI CHAMUNORWA is a luminary and an example in his hometown of Kadoma.
He was one of the first players to make it big in football, rising fast from the farming town to join giants Dynamos.
He would shine in the CAF Champions League mostly partnering Kaitano Tembo at the heart of the Glamour Boys defence including in the second leg of the 1998 final which Dynamos lost 4-2 to Ivory Coast’s side Asec Mimosas.
After leaving the field, Chamunorwa went into coaching, mentoring lower division teams like Lake Harvest and Rimuka Market.
Things haven’t been well for him of late, however, especially after being diagnosed of a chronic ailment.
The Kadoma community haven’t turned their backs on him though.
They have organized a football tournament to raise funds which will go towards his medical bills and general upkeep.
Kadoma’s iconic venue, Rimuka Stadium is set to be a hive of activity as the town’s most followed clubs come face-to-face with all the proceeds going towards Chamunorwa’s upkeep.
Cuthbert Malajila’s CUMA will square against Kadoma City in the main match which will be curtain-raised by another thriller between Rimuka Market and Hurrican.
Event organiser Ophias Mukucha said he came up with the idea as a way to honour the legendary defender.
“One of our own, Tineyi Chamunorwa is not feeling well from a chronic illness. So this is a community initiative event where we want to fundraise for him,” said Mukucha.
“I roped in a friend in coming up with this. We engaged community stakeholders to involve everyone to come on board. We involved the business community, the former players both in and out of Kadoma like his former teammate at Dynamos Desmond Maringwa, residents, fans, just everyone.”
Entry fee for the event has been pegged at US$1.
