A local organisation, Mudavanhu Charitable Trust, has established six nurse-aid training centres in different provinces across the country, with a new one set to be established in Hwedza District in Mashonaland East.
The Trust, which is run by retired army sergeant Shepherd Mudavanhu and Colonel Godfrey Chikura, said it is taking up President Mnangagwa’s mantra of “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo” in spearheading its projects.
In an interview with The Sunday Mail Online, Rtd Sergeant Mudavanhu said they have since trained more than 200 nurse aides, who are attached in different health institutions across the country.
“The increased ageing population and a slow population growth indicated by recent population and housing census results show that there will be a need for more home-based health caregivers such as nurse aides.
“The Trust boasts multiple centres in Mashonaland East, West and Central provinces, and Hwedza District will house one such training centre at Madzimbahwe Clinic,” he said.
Currently, the Trust employs more than 15 staff members, with some of them being stand-in registered nurses.
However, Rtd Sergeant Mudavanhu said the Trust is also facing challenges in terms of governing and regulating some areas of the nurse aide profession.
He said there was a need for regularisation of nurse aides.
“There is an absence of an association representing local and international nurse-aide training institutions to pass on collective grievances of nurse aides to Government,” he said.
