ZIMBABWE’S sprint king Ngoni Makusha is proud of himself after setting another 200-metre record during the Lusaka Athletics Competitions that were held in Lusaka, Zambia, last week.
Makusha is the national 100m record holder (9,89 seconds).
He also holds the national long jump record with 8,40 metres.
Both performances were achieved during the 2011 NCAA Division I Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, United States, where he completed the 100m and long jump double.
In Lusaka, he participated in the 100m and 200m and achieved podium finishes.
“The competition was a success for me, I would say, considering I have been preparing to peak towards a major tournament; that is, the African Championships.
“The success in the competition just shows what I have been doing in training. Now I am just glad to see what I will do at the Africa Championships,” Makusha said.
In the 100m, he ran his season-best of 10,28s, and in the 200m event, he managed his second-best of 20,51s.
Makusha’s personal best over 200m is 20,49 seconds.
“I am happy I ran my season-best in the 100m and my second fastest 200m ever, and I am just excited to run those 20,51s, which was close to my first best of 20,49.
“There are some pressures that come from being a top athlete at this level. Everyone wants to be where you are; everyone wants to take your spot.
“But I am used to it … it’s a competition against myself to get better as an athlete, not to compete with other athletes.
“I am now shifting my focus to the Africa Senior Championships in Mauritius next month after a successful competition,” he said.
Makusha will be attending the continental showpiece for the third time.
The African Senior Championships are scheduled for June 8 to June 23.
