BASKETBALL Union of Zimbabwe president Joe Mujuru has welcomed the intervention by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) and vowed to respect their ruling over the controversy surrounding last month’s elections in Gwanda.
“I wish to state on the record that I have heard all these allegations being levelled against me through the grapevine, and we were not copied on the correspondence between the Harare Basketball Association (HBA) and SRC,” said Mujuru.
“However, we welcome the SRC’s intervention and remain confident that we will be cleared of any and all wrongdoings by their investigations.”
Mujuru and his secretary-general Charmaine Chamboko retained their posts during the union’s elective congress last month.
However, some quarters are challenging the outcome.
The HBA, through their secretary-general Tinashe Nyamuziwa, have even gone so far as to write to the SRC seeking to nullify the election results.
Mujuru and Chamboko are accused of allegedly contravening the SRC’s code of good governance by acting as an election commission during the elections.
They are also being accused of illegally barring Mashonaland Central from participating, as well as bringing in bogus and fraudulent delegates to represent the National Association of Primary Heads (NAPH).
The SRC has since acknowledged receiving the letter.
“The Sports and Recreation Commission acknowledges receipt of your letter dated February 9, contents of which have been noted,” said SRC acting director-general Sebastian Garikai.
