Harare Athletics Club chairperson Walter Chimuka is a happy man.
This follows the successful return of the Old Mutual Harare Marathon held at Old Georgians Sports Club on Sunday.
“We are excited that we were finally able to host the race after being forced to cancel last year’s edition due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Chimuka, who represents chief sponsor Old Mutual.
“We would also like to reassure the athletics community that as Old Mutual, we remain available to pursue future collaborations, partnerships or any growth initiatives that promote the growth of the sport across the country,” he said.
The race, shelved for the last two editions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, returned with a bang on Sunday as it attracted roughly 800 participants from all the country’s provinces.
Patience Murowe won the 42,2km race, walking away with $100 000 in the ladies category, while Jonathan Chinyoka walked away with $100 00 for the 42,2km marathon in the men’s race.
Chimuka applauded the support that they continue to receive from Harare Athletics Club and the Sports and Recreation Commission.
Participants were also treated to a variety of races and activities, with some taking part in fun runs and wellness initiatives such as Zumba.
