Emarald Mushore and Paidaishe Zengeni look to have rediscovered their form.
The two local chess players were the biggest winners at this year’s edition of the Steward Bank Easter Open Chess tournament.
Coincidentally, the two almost called time on their careers, after failing to clinch the coveted titles during last year’s event.
Now, Mushore is the reigning Steward Bank Easter Open chess champion after garnering eight-and-half-points, from a possible nine.
In second place was Blessing Moyo, who had seven-and-a-half points, while Farai Hamandishe walked away with the bronze medal after finishing with seven points.
Mushore revealed that after missing out on the gold medal last year, he contemplated quitting the sport, only to be convinced by International Master, Rodwell Makoto.
“Last year I had a very bad Easter Open tournament. I was even considering pulling out of the tournament this time around.
“However, International Master Makoto said I should not do that, because some of the kids appreciate playing with me.
“I am happy that I did participate and won this time around.
“This is my third Easter Open title in four years,” said Mushore.
Just like his counterpart, Zengeni, who scoped gold in the Ladies’ Open section, almost quit the game after numerous losses.
“There comes a time when you lose so much, and you start questioning yourself.
“Should I be really playing chess, and if I do not win anything, should I continue playing?
“Well, the answer to these questions is ‘yes’.
“I am here celebrating my first chess title,” said the ecstatic Zengeni.
