MUTARE Lions Specialty Club continues to intensify its reforestation drive after they recently handed over more than 80 avocado plants to Murahwa and Joshua Dube primary schools.
The club is a non-profiting humanitarian organisation with its key mission being to assist the vulnerable in communities in issues ranging from environment, health and natural disasters.
Handing over the trees, Ms Beauty Dorothy Hughes said: “As Mutare Lions Specialty Club we started this reforestation drive by handing over some avocado trees to these schools as we intend to promote reforestation. We handed over the trees to the primary schools to encourage them to be responsible as they will have an obligation to water the trees up to maturing stage.
“We received the trees from environmentalist, Mr Eliah Maponde who is also a member of the club. We will continue to work with schools and other organisations in our humanitarian and reforestation drive,” she said.
Joshua Dube Primary School opened in 2016.
Receiving the trees, one of the school teachers, a Mrs Lucas said: “We are happy with what Lions Club has done for us as a school. The avocado trees will help us to obtain fruits as well as medicinal advantages. We are a new school and such initiatives from stakeholders make us feel accommodated and honoured as a learning institution.”
