SMALL-SCALE farmers in Mutasa District are set to venture into fish farming as part of efforts to enhance household food security and expand the local communities’ livelihoods.

Low production costs and easy access to water in the district makes it ideal for aquaculture projects.

Zimbabwe Farmers’ Union chairperson, Mr Aaron Mapondera said equipping the farmers with the basic and requisite skills through training will help the beneficiaries run the projects sustainably.

“We have many small-scale farmers in this district that are keen to venture into fish farming. Some are already practising it and training on how to commercially run the enterprises sustainably and profitably will go a long way in capacitating them,” said Mr Mapondera.

He added that viability of the projects will result in adequate supplies for local markets, especially supermarkets.

Government is exploring ways of promoting small-scale commercial fish production in all provinces.
