Communications expert Ray Mawerera will chair the new Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) board unveiled by Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu on Wednesday.

He will be deputised by Dr Precious Sibiya.

Other board members are Mrs Rita Likukuma, Mrs Veneranda Munyoro, Ms Beatrice Tonhodzayi, Mr Tare Munzara, Ms Precious Mazhande and Mr Admire Ndlovu.

Newly appointed CEO Ms Winnie Muchanyuka is an ex-officio member.

Three more members will be announced in due course.

Speaking during the unveiling event, Minister Ndlovu highlighted key areas that need to be addressed to ensure the tourism sector effectively bounces back from the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The sector is the second-best foreign currency earner. We have to discuss issues on the ease of doing business and licensing that are critical in the revival of the tourism sector. It is equally important that we work together to address issues of the negative destination image that Zimbabwe, sadly, continues to get,” he said.

Mr Mawerera said an open mind and sharing of ideas among stakeholders was crucial for the post-Covid-19 recovery plan to be a success.
