REVITALISATION of indigenous languages is essential to trigger active participation of communities in nation-building and socio-economic development programmes, President Mnangagwa has said.
Addressing the National Languages Conference in Victoria Falls on Wednesday, the President said indigenous languages are important in the transmission of culture, customs and history.
“Similarly, increased production and productivity in sectors such as agriculture, mining and manufacturing, among others, should be promoted through the use of our own indigenous languages,” he said.
“Indeed, an informed citizenry is more empowered and equipped to play their part in the building of our motherland, Zimbabwe, brick by brick, stone upon stone.”
He implored parents to teach their children local languages.
“I, therefore, call upon parents and guardians to set a good example by teaching our children their indigenous languages. This will also help reinforce our cultural norms, which emphasise the respect of oneself and others, including elders, our community and the environment.”
Government, he added, continues to strengthen the country’s education system by increasing the number of language professionals, especially in less commonly taught languages.
