More than 100 000 street vendors have been registered by the Harare City Council in a move that will see them using designated vending sites instead of sidewalks.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail, Harare City Council head of corporate communications, Mr Stanley Gama said: “More than 100 000 street vendors have been registered with the City of Harare to operate at the designated areas.

“All the vendors who are registered with the council will be allocated space accordingly. The move is designed to bring sanity in the capital.”

Mr Gama expressed optimism that the exercise will achieve its goal with the help of all stakeholders.

“In order to achieve this, the community has to participate; the vendors have been coming through to register to get proper vending sites,’’ he said

Various stakeholders, including Vendors Associations and Residents Associations, have been engaged to assist in moving vendors to the designated areas.

“This will not be a once off thing, they are covering all the places, starting from uptown going down town, “said Mr Gama.
