Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) director-general Dr Gift Machengete took the ‘Businessman of the Year’ gong, at the recently-held National Leadership and Management Excellence Awards.

The awards are organised by the Zimbabwe Institute of Management.

Dr Machengete walked away with the top award because of several strategic initiatives that were successfully implemented by Potraz over the course of 2021.

As director-general of Potraz, Dr Machengete’s responsibility is to ensure that the Authority meets its mandate, which consists of: licensing, consumer protection, regulation and provision of universal access to postal and telecommunication services.

Some of Dr Machengete’s key achievements during the year include, the mooting and implementation of the tower relocation project to create shared sites; the implementation of the Telecommunications Traffic Monitoring System (TTMS), and the implementation of the Electromagnetic Frequency Project (EMF).

The regulator also implemented the Converged Licensing Framework for Zimbabwe to align with international standards, and adopted the National Frequency Allocation Plan in line with World Radio Conference 19 Standards, among other initiatives.
