PRESIDENT Mnangagwa has today proclaimed August 23 as the date harmonised general elections will be held in the country.
The President proclaimed this in the Government gazzete. He also set June 21 as the date on which nomination courts will sit countrywide to accept applications by political parties and their candidates to take part in the polls.
In the Proclamation, President Mnangagwa also set October 2 as the date for a run-off for the election of the office of the President in the event such an election becomes necessary.
This is in terms of Section 38(1)(a)(iii) of the Electoral Act.
The announcement of the election date marks the commencement of the campaign season, which has hitherto been low key by all the political parties.
The ruling Zanu PF party and opposition Citizens Coalition for Change are the main contestants in the elections, in which several other smaller parties are expected to take part.
The polls will be for the president as well as a parliamentary and local government representatives and will be held simultaneously.
