NEW: Spate of copper cable theft hits Bulawayo

BULAWAYO has been hit by a spate of theft of electricity cables with five cases having been reported in a single night, leaving three suburbs without power. 

The incidents occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday. 

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the cases: 

“ZRP is concerned with cases of theft of copper cables belonging to ZESA, NRZ, TelOne and other utilities. From 20 to 21 March 2022, ZRP Queenspark recorded three cases of theft of ZESA cables, while ZRP Hillside and ZRP Tshabalala also recorded a single case each,” Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said. 

“Anyone with information on vandalism of electrical equipment to contact 0242 703631 or WhatsApp 0712800197 #notovandalism.” 

Last week, Pumula East residents apprehended three officers based at Pumula police station in the city and handed them over to the police for alleged theft of copper cables in the suburb. 

One of the cops was nabbed in his service uniform, while his accomplices were in civilian clothing.
