APART from helping to forge stronger social cohesion and boosting self esteem in young people, the power of sport can also be used as an effective tool to tackle social vices, the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Nokuthula Matsikinyire, has said.
Minister Matsikinyire was speaking during the official launch of a local sportswear company – Range Sports’ – Mutare branch on Monday.
She said coupled with the obvious health benefits, sport can play a key role in raising awareness on curtailing drug and substance abuse as well as reduce delinquency among the youth.
“While sport has lots of health benefits, it also boasts the power to be used as a vehicle in promoting positive social change among youths. Societal ills and other anti-social behaviour such as drug and substance abuse as well premarital sex can be fought through sport because once the youth engage in sport and find something to occupy them, then they will not indulge in such ruinous actions.
“Partaking in sporting activities will teach them to be responsible and we hope that Range Sports will be heavily involved in this regard,” said Honourable Matsikinyire.
She urged the company to play ball in tackling social vices through sport.
Range Sports managing director Retired Brigadier General Amos Svovanepasi said in serving Manicaland, their long-term plan is to provide sportswear and equipment to at least one boy’s and one girls’ team in al the respective districts of the province.
