ZIMBABWE will contest for a seat during the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council elections that will be held later this year in Montreal, Canada.
The elections – to be held between September 27 and October 14 – will take place during the 41st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Zimbabwe intends to be the SADC representative to ICAO following the expiry of Zambia’s tenure in the ICAO Council, and in accordance with the SADC rotational principle.
Addressing Wednesday’s post-Cabinet briefing, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said Cabinet had approved the country’s bid for an ICAO Council seat.
“Cabinet considered and approved Zimbabwe’s bid for an International Civil Aviation Organisation Council seat in Part III of the ICAO elections that was presented by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Honourable Felix Mhona,” she said.
ICAO holds a three-part election, with the first being for states of chief importance in air transport.
The election is held within four days of the opening of the session.
The second part involves the election of states not already elected in the first part, but which make the largest contribution to the provision of facilities for international civil air navigation.
It is held immediately after the first part of the election.
The third part under which Zimbabwe intends to contest is for “states not elected in either the first or the second part and whether or not they were candidates in either of those parts, and whose designation will ensure that all the major geographical areas of the world are represented on the council,” states the ICAO website.
This election is held as soon as possible after the expiry of 24 hours following the publication of the list of candidates.
