ZIMBABWE will join the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Families on Sunday.

The day came into being through United Nations (UN) resolution 47/237 of September 1993 and has been celebrated every year since 1994.

The international theme for this year’s commemmorations is “Families and Urbanisation.”

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, the Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Dr Sithembiso Nyoni, said: “The objectives for the commemorations this year are highlighting the challenges faced by families in the pursuance of urbanisation and come up with ways to make urbanisation strategies and processes more family-centred.”

Dr Nyoni said urbanisation is a unique developmental phenomenon that has impacted the existence of the family unit over time, and has exposed families to many socio-economic experiences since its emergence at the start of the modern industrial era.
