A Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) ranger, Josphat Mandishara (62), was trampled to death by an elephant in Kariba on Thursday.
According to a press statement released by the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), Mandishara unexpectedly encountered a charging elephant, which fatally injured him.
His remains were subsequently transported to Kariba District Hospital for a post-mortem, and the incident has been reported to the police.
In light of this tragedy, ZimParks has deployed rangers from the Charara Safari Area to manage the elephant involved.
“The safety of our staff and wildlife is our utmost priority, and we are committed to taking the necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future,” reads part of the statement.
ZimParks Director General, Professor Edson Gandiwa expressed heartfelt condolences to Mandishara’s family.
“He will be remembered for his dedication and service to wildlife conservation in Zimbabwe,” reads the statement.
