Reckless and dangerous drivers in Harare’s central business district (CBD) will now be arrested and taken to court within 48 hours, a Government official has said.
Motorists driving against oncoming traffic, pavements and those who deliberately create additional lanes by encroaching cycle tracks and pedestrian walkways will also be arrested.
In a statement on Wednesday, Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Mr Tafadzwa Muguti said police and Harare City Council have since launched an operation to curb traffic jams at all major intersections during peak hours.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police and the City of Harare shall from today (Wednesday) launch joint operations to curb traffic jams at all major intersections during peak hours, whilst intersections with faulty traffic signals shall have full-time deployments,” he said.
“All unlicensed and unroadworthy vehicles are to be impounded and compliance protocols are to be enforced at the operator’s cost.
“This includes those operating with yellow plates and mushikashika.”
