A NYANGA couple’s marriage is on the rocks after the husband discovered that his neighbour committed suicide as a result of the affair he had with his wife.

The matter recently came to light at acting Chief Saunyama’s court as Joice Maidei was accusing her husband, William Nyongo, of squandering their hard-earned wealth behind her back.

Maidei claimed that upon hearing rumours that their neighbour, Paul Feshete had committed suicide when their illicit love affair turned sour, Nyongo started selling their cattle and spending the money with his mother.

“Feshete’s death brought with it bad luck to my marriage. Ever since his death in January, my husband has not been the same. He has accused me of having been in an extra-marital relationship with the late Feshete.

“He moved out to stay with his mother and took with him our 21 cattle. Since then, he has sold four cattle behind my back and I am afraid that he will continue selling them. He squanders the money with his mother and forgets that he has children that also need a share of that money,” she said.

In his suicide note, Feshete instructed his brother to take care of his family.

He also said his body was not supposed to be taken to the mortuary, before ordering his family not to blame anyone for his death.

However, before committing suicide, the late Feshete is alleged to have told his friends and family that he was feeling bad after having an affair with his neighbour’s wife and being confronted by her husband.

However, Maidei rubbished the claims and told the court that the late Feshete called her before taking his life, adding that it still haunts her that she missed his calls.

“Feshete was my best friend. In fact, I used to play with his mother who is the same age with my mother. He approached me and told me that I should be friends with him and not his mother. That is when we became friends.

“I still feel bad that I missed his calls because he tried calling me several times before his death. He was already dead when I tried to return his calls. Maybe I could have saved his life if we had managed to talk when he called me. For someone to accuse me of having been in love with him is ridiculous,” she said.

She added: “I know the person behind all this. It is my husband’s nephew. He asked me out and I spurned his advances. He told me that it was better for me to cheat with him than with the late Feshete and he fed my husband with these unfounded allegations.”

She claimed she is now a laughing stock in the village because of the issue.

“I have lost respect in the Nyongo family and the community at large. I am now being labelled as the late Feshete’s concubine even by small children. Everyone believes that I was having an affair with Feshete.

“My husband was away in Harare during that time and only returned to the village recently. No one actually cares about what he was doing there with various women,” charged Maidei.

She begged acting Chief Saunyama to intervene and help her get her husband back.

She also asked the court to order Nyongo to stop selling their cattle.

However, Nyongo was not present at court.

In an interview with Weekender, a villager, Tsitsi Marime said the late Feshete was having a affair with Maidei.

“I don’t want to be involved in these issues, but it was common knowledge that she was having an affair with Feshete while her husband was away in Harare. When her husband came back, he confronted Feshete and he could not stand it. That’s why he committed suicide,” said Marime.

The matter was adjourned to today (Friday).
