THE City of Harare has said there are no confirmed cases of hantavirus infection in Harare.

This follows reports by the World Health Organisation (WHO) of a cluster of hantavirus infections linked to cruise ship travel involving several countries, with eight cases and three deaths reported internationally.

“The City of Harare wishes to inform the public that, as of 12 May 2026, there are no confirmed cases of hantavirus infection in Harare.

“The Ministry of Health and Child Care has confirmed that three Zimbabwean health workers who were identified as contacts of a confirmed case while on Ascension Island have tested negative for the virus and are under precautionary quarantine and monitoring by health workers,” said the City of Harare in a statement.

The council urges residents to remain vigilant and follow preventative measures.

“Hantavirus is a zoonotic virus that causes respiratory disease or haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

“It is carried by rodents, including rats, mice and bats.

“Infection occurs mainly through inhaling tiny particles from infected rodents’ urine, faeces or saliva, or through contact with contaminated surfaces. Human-to-human transmission via respiratory droplets is also possible.

“If you experience symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

“Signs and symptoms include fever, severe tiredness, body weakness, headache, muscle pains, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, cough, chest tightness, dizziness and low blood pressure,” the statement reads.

The council urges the public to keep their homes clean, store food safely, dispose of waste properly, seal rodent entry points, avoid contact with rodents and their droppings, wash hands regularly, and wear protective gear when cleaning rodent-infested areas.
