NPL T20 BLAST RACE HOTS UP

A PAIR of blazing fifties from the veteran warrior Cephas Zhuwao and Tashinga Musekiwa helped to take Takashinga Patriots 2 to a huge score that gave Westside no hope in their NPL T20 Blast round-robin match at Old Hararians Sports Club on Monday.

Zhuwao opened the batting with Ryan Kamwemba, who was no slouch himself in scoring 35 off 21 balls in their opening partnership of 95 in less than seven overs as they tore the Westside bowlers to shreds.

Zhuwao was out in the seventh over at 110, having made 66 off 23 balls, including seven sixes and four fours.

Marshall Takodza made 40 not out off 32 balls, and Musekiwa, coming in at 159 for five in the 13th over, took just 25 balls to add 57 not out.

The final total off 20 overs was a fearsome 256 for five wickets.

Westside did their best in their hopeless task, Clive Chitumba scoring 41 off 18 balls and Definate Mawadzi 42 off 21, but in 18 overs they were dismissed for 170, giving Takashinga victory by 86 runs, a welcome win after a run of disappointing results.

Ryan Simbi took the bowling honours with four wickets for 15 runs in three overs.

At Takashinga Cricket Club, fifties from Nyasha Mayavo and Terrence Makoroma, followed by four cheap wickets from Courage Gwarada, ensured an easy 114-run victory for Rainbow over Queens Sports Club.

Rainbow did not begin well, losing two wickets for 32 before those two batters formed a partnership of 124 in 13 overs, leading to a total of 176 for three.

At Old Hararians Sports Club, another fine century from Jayden Schadendorf was the highlight of Rangers’ sixth successive victory in the NPL T20 Blast tournament, as they beat Mbizo by six wickets.

Mbizo, batting first, would have been in a bad state without Muhammad Anas Aqil, who hit 49 off 34 balls, and Isaac Danladi, 57 not out off 35 balls.

The next-best score was only 11, and their total was a moderate 162 for eight wickets.

Although Mathew Campbell went for one, Schadendorf was in brilliant form from the start, monopolising the scoring.

He added 115 for the second wicket with Alistair Frost, who made 28, and reached his century three balls before victory was completed in the 16th over.

At Takashinga Sports Club, good bowling of Wellington Masakadza and Trevor Mutsamba helped Takashinga Patriots 1 to a six-wicket victory over Gladiators in their NPL T20 Blast clash at on Monday.

The Gladiators innings was remarkable in that Lennox Chando, opening the innings, scored 61 of a total of 111 for nine wickets — he was out at 88 for seven — and nobody else reached double figures, the next best effort being eight.

Masakadza bowled four very economical overs and took four wickets for 15 runs, while Mutsamba had three for 29.

The target of 112 was little trouble for Takashinga, with Joylord Gumbie (30) and Tinashe Kamunhukamwe (19) opening with a partnership of 48.

Four were out for 60, but Masakadza with 31 and Timycen Maruma with 21, both not out, took Takashinga to victory without further loss.
