NRZ sued over salary arrears

A FORMER National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) worker has taken the parastatal to court over his outstanding salary amounting to more than $34 000.

Mr Boniface Lunga, who was a train inspector, has through his lawyers Morris-Davies and Company, filed summons at the Bulawayo High Court demanding $34 898, 20 in salary arrears.

Mr Lunga’s contract of employment was terminated on July 31 last year.

In papers before the court, Mr Lunga cited NRZ as the defendant.

He said NRZ has, despite acknowledging the debt, continuously failed or neglected to pay him his dues.

“At the termination of employment relationship, the defendant owed plaintiff the sum of $36 065,53. NRZ acknowledged its indebtedness through a pay slip and has since paid me three instalments, leaving me with an outstanding balance of $34 898,20. Despite a letter of demand, the defendant has neglected, failed or refused to pay me the balance,” said Mr Lunga

He wants an order directing NRZ to pay outstanding salaries at an interest rate of five percent per annum and the legal costs.

“Wherefore plaintiff claim against the defendant is for an order for the payment of $34 898,20 being the balance for outstanding salaries with five percent interest calculated from October 2, 2017 to the date of final payment,” said Mr Lunga.
