SEASOND karateka Fortune Nyabanga successfully defended his Kwekwe Invitational seniors’ karate tournament at Queens Sports Club.
The Harare based athlete managed to get the better of Blessing “CC Banks” Sithole in the tournament dubbed “Best of the best”.
Organised by Shepherd Ziwira, who is the Japan Karate Association of Zimbabwe chief instructor and Midlands Karate Union technical director, the tournament attracted karatekas from across the country.
Nyabanga said he is looking forward to continue working hard.
“I am happy that I managed to defend my title and fighting against someone like Sithole always comes with a challenge and I thank my supporting team. The contest was tough, but I managed to do well and I am grateful to the judges.
“I am now looking forward to more national tournaments and I will continue working hard,” said Nyabanga.
In the kindergarten category, Kupakwashe Mukewa and Letwin Ncube were outstanding as they stood out.
The five-year-olds managed to get the better of several other contestants.
The juniors’ category was won by Aiden Ziwira and Michael Zvirikuzve while Mzingaye Makudo also did well.
Lucky Dube continued with his fine form in the cadets’ category while the girls’ category was won by Tanatswa Pedzera. Francisca Badzarigere and Shasmeen Yalabi were second and third respectively.
The senior ladies category was dominated by Kudzanai Ndiripo, Nicole Kadzombe, Shantel Homela and Yvtte Pondo were third and fourth.
Tanyaradzwa Ziwira, was crowned the senior men, after he survived a serious injury scare to defend his under 60kg male category.
Chipwanyira went on to defend his under 75kg.
