HARARE – Nyangani Renewable Energy is looking to increase electricity generation at its Riverside Power Station by 300 percent to 10 megawatts (MW) from the current 2,5MW.
The power generating company, trading as Riverside Power Station has submitted its application to the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) to amend its licence as it moves towards expanding its generation capacity.
Riverside initially operated a 2,5MW solar plant in Mutoko’s Musvaire Village as an independent power producer.
“Notice is given that Nyangani Renewable Energy Private Limited trading as Riverside Power Station, a company licenced under the Electricity Act of 2002 to construct, own and operate a 2,5 MW solar plant at Musvaire Village in Mutoko, Mashonaland East Province as an independent power producer, has submitted an application to ZERA for amendment of its generation licence.
“The amendment of the licence entails increasing the installed capacity of the power station from the current 2,5MW to 10MW.”
Zimbabwe has been working on increasing power generation through independent power producers (IPPs) to cut its import bill on electricity.
As of May this year, IPPs were contributing 2 percent into the national grid.
A total of 13 IPPs were operating at national level generating a cumulative 130 MG of electricity.
These include Green Fuel (18,30MW), Duru mini hydro (2,20MW), Triangle Estates (45MW), Nyamhingura Mini Hydro (1,10MW), Pungwe B Power Station (15,25MW), Hippo Valley Estates (33MW), Pungwe C Power Station (3,75MW).
Others who make up the rest are Kupinga Renewable Energy (1,60MW), Nottingham Estate (1,5MW), Hauna Power Station (2,30MW), Claremont Mini Hydro (0,30MW) and Riverside Power Project (2,5MW).
