Orphanage faces collapse

DZIKWA Trust, a centre for the care of orphans and vulnerable children in Dzivaresekwa, faces a bleak future after its main sponsor, the Finnish government, pulled out this year.

The centre needs money for the welfare of over 100 children under its care.

Speaking at his belated 75th birthday party, Dzikwa Trust founder Seppo Ainamo, poured his heart out saying urgent action needed to be taken to ensure the centre did not collapse.

“We are happy with the education programme but there are challenges also,” he said. “The government of Finland stopped supporting us for the time being. We are now $120 000 in the red. We have to find an additional $120 000 to keep us going. Maybe not so much.”

The Finnish national who has run the centre with his wife Oili for the past 23 years, said the centre was inviting individuals and corporates to support their endeavours.

Swedish ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Lars Ronnas, who was among the guests at the event applauded Mr Ainamo for his “golden heart” and encouraged locals to support the children.
