ACTING Zifa president Omega Sibanda has hailed the Zimbabwe men’s Under-23 side and the Mighty Warriors for their success stories yesterday.
The two teams were involved in crucial assignments yesterday and they did well to keep the country’s hopes alive for next year’s Olympic Games in the men’s and women’s football.
The men’s Under-23 team edge Swaziland on away goals rule after fighting to a 2-2 draw at Somhlolo Stadium in the return leg of the CAF Under-23 Championships second round qualifiers.
Sibanda was also impressed by the Mighty Warriors who turned the tables on Zambia yesterday with a 1-0 win at Rufaro and progressed to the next stage, again on away goals.
“We want to thank the coaches and the players for a job well done in flying our national flag very high.
“It was a difficult week given the challenges the two teams faced but they fought gallantly for their country and we salute them. We also want to thank the ZIFA board member Bernard Gwarada for the contribution that he made to help the Mighty Warriors and the Northern Region leadership for the support that they gave to the team. It shows that if we are united and we pull in one direction we can achieve a lot in football,” said Sibanda.
The Zimbabwe Under-23 team put behind them the chaotic travel arrangements to eliminate Swaziland and set up a date with bitter rivals South Africa in the final round of the CAF Under-23 Championships. Harare City’s Tino Kadewere and Ronald Pfumbidzai scored for the Young Warriors to ensure that the team progressed on away goals rule. The first leg had ended in a disappointing goalless draw at Rufaro last week. The Mighty Warriors were even more impressive as they overturned the 2-1 deficit they suffered in the first leg in Zambia.
