DCC4 chairman Cde Jaison Passade, yesterday handed over 300kg of maize seed to St Joseph’s House for Boys to enable the institution that cater for orphaned children start farming activities. Speaking at the occasion, Cde Passade said the President’s input scheme was also meant to assist disadvantaged communities.
“This is a home for orphaned children and we want to assist in growing food for the young boys here. The input scheme is not only meant for the traditional farmers but also for these needy communities,” he said.
Cde Passade thanked the President for the input scheme, adding it would assist the nation achieve food security.
“This is a noble programme that should ensure that the nation achieves food security. We hope other well-wishers would take a cue from President Mugabe to assist farmers and the nation at large,” he said.
Board member for St Joseph’s House for Boys, Mr Everisto Mudhikwa also welcomed the donation.
“Last year we harvested 10 tonnes of maize and this year we hope to increase that harvest to ensure the boys have enough food,” he said.
An inmate at the house, Kudakwashe Mangara, thanked President Mugabe for his support.
“The President’s input scheme will assist us to become self reliant because we have faced a number of challenges especially in having enough food.
“We thank God for looking after the President and we hope he will continue to guide him,” Mangara said.
Meanwhile, a number of residents in DCC4 also received maize seed at various centres including at Morris Depot, Belvedere, Gunhill and in Avondale.
All the six District Co-ordinating Committee’s in the capital received 33 tonnes of maize seed for distribution for peri-urban agriculture.
