POLICE in Chipinge District have impounded more than 40 mushikashika vehicles for illegally operating and violating the national lockdown restrictions.
Private vehicles remain prohibited from carrying passengers and only buses and kombis registered under the Zupco franchise are allowed to do so.
Superintendent Noah Nyamuzimba, who is responsible for crime in Chipinge District, said police have tightened security to control the movement of vehicles and are arresting those found on the wrong side of the law.
“We have discovered that some kombi operators are disregarding the law and continue to ferry passengers, some at night. Others are using illegal routes to evade roadblocks and police checkpoints.
“So far, we have arrested and impounded more than 40 mushikamushika vehicles as we continue with the clampdown on pirate kombis and taxis. We want to warn those who are illegally operating that the police remain in full force to curb their activities and we will not hesitate to arrest them as they are violating the national lockdown regulations,” said Supt Nyamuzimba.
He also urged the public to desist from boarding pirate kombis and taxis as this is unlawful and they also risk being robbed.
