Govt scales up Covid-19 fight

GOVERNMENT is accelerating the Covid-19 vaccination drive and has also extended by two more weeks the enhanced national Level 4 lockdown as it moves to flatten the curve of infections and win the war against the pandemic.

With the highly transmissible Delta variant now circulating locally and contributing 80 percent of new cases, vaccination is being taken to communities and speeded up while all lockdown measures will be strictly enforced to stem the tide of rising new infections.

Announcing the extension of existing measures at State House in Harare yesterday, President Mnangagwa said the country was putting in place a range of restrictions meant to contain and mitigate the Covid-19 infections in line with World Health Organisation guidelines.

This means that all the measures like the 6.30pm to 6am curfew, 8am to 3.30pm operating hours for businesses, intercity travel prohibition, social and religious gatherings ban as well as 30-people limit at funerals are still in place while schools remain closed until the next review in a fortnight.

To quicken the pace of the vaccination programme, medical staff from the police and defence forces are being seconded to vaccination teams from the Ministry of Health and Child Care and local authorities to ensure that people eligible for inoculation get the doses as demand for jabs is going up in the face of increasing numbers in new infections and subsequent deaths.
