FOR 24 years, the ZIFA Eastern Region had operated without a corporate partner since its inception in 2001.
However, this year marked a significant turning point as the regional football administrative body’s flagship league was rebranded to the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Division One League, courtesy of a sponsorship deal with Pacific Storm Company, a local cigarettes producer.
While it is worth noting that the corporate partnership comes from a cigarette producer, which is a trend discouraged globally under World Health Organisation guidelines on sponsorship for sport, the benefits of this partnership for the region appear to outweigh any concerns.
In an interview with Post Sport, Frank Bhunu, a passionate Mutare football enthusiast, shared his thoughts on the Pacific Storm Company and ZIFA Eastern Region partnership.
Bhunu said: “This is a tale of transformation when we talk about the Eastern Region and Pacific Storm partnership. In a vibrant
corner of the sporting world, the marriage of the Eastern Region and Pacific Storm Company has ushered in a new era of infrastructure development. This partnership is, not just about enhancing sports facilities, it is about building a community, fostering talent, and creating opportunities for all.”
Bhunu outlined the infrastructure development that has come though this partnership.
“Vengere Stadium is now a beacon of hope. At the heart of this transformation lies Vengere Stadium, a venue that has seen remarkable improvements. The newly dug-out areas provide players with a modern, comfortable space to prepare for their games. These enhancements are complemented by the meticulously maintained fences, ensuring the safety of both players and spectators. Luxurious seating, gourmet food stalls, and dedicated service have transformed these venues into premier destinations for sports enthusiasts.
“The stadium now stands as a symbol of progress, drawing crowds eager to witness thrilling matches. Adding to the excitement, both Vengere and Mucheke stadia have introduced exclusive VIP experiences. The printing of VIP passes enhances the MatchDay atmosphere, providing fans with an elevated experience.
“Mucheke Stadium has not been left behind. With ongoing maintenance efforts, it has become a model of excellence. The grounds are kept in pristine condition, ensuring that athletes can perform at their best. The upgrades include enhanced lighting systems for night games and
improved seating arrangements, making every match a memorable occasion.”
Bhunu added: “The marriage of the Eastern Region and Pacific Storm goes beyond physical structures. Community engagement programmes have been launched, focusing on grassroots development and sports education.
Local schools are now involved in traiing programmes, encouraging young athletes to pursue their dreams.
“Moreover, there are exciting projects on the horizon.
Plans for a multi-sport complex are underway, designed to host various events, from athletics to swimming. This facility promises to serve as a hub for training and competition, further solidifying the region’s commitment to sports,” said Bhunu.
For Bhunu, the partnership between Eastern Region and Pacific Strom Company has a bright future.
“As the Eastern Region and Pacific Storm continue to work together, the impact of their collaboration is palpable. The improvements at Vengere and Mucheke stadia reflect a shared vision for a vibrant sporting culture.
With a focus on infrastructure, community, and athlete development, the future looks bright for sports in this region. The partnership is, not just about building stadiums – it is about building dreams,” he said.
