BARELY a month after they bankrolled a one-man pool tournament in the sprawling suburb of Dangamvura in Mutare, Savanah Pacific, manufactures of the Pacific cigarette brand, will sponsor another tournament, The Weekender has learnt. Savanah Pacific were satisfied with the standards of competition in pool competitions in Mutare in general and the highly successful tournament in Dangamvura also helped convince the cigarette manufacturers to pour more financial resources towards the development of the game in Mutare.
Savanah Pacific sales representative in Mutare Tafadzwa Kampira confirmed that his company was sponsoring another pool tournament in the eastern border city.
Kampira said that company executives from Harare would also take time to see for themselves the hype the game of pool has generated in Mutare.
“It is good that the game of pool is developing at a fast pace here in Mutare and as Pacific we are happy to be associated with a well-organised sport.
“It is against this background that we will sponsor another tournament after having sponsored another one recently. Company executives from Harare will also take time to see for themselves the hype the game of pool has generated in Mutare. There is possibility of a long time relationship between us as sponsors and the game of pool here in Mutare,” he said.
In a separate interview, Mutare Pool League spokesperson Taurai Makanidzana, who won the inaugural contest held recently in Dangamvura, heartily thanked Savannah Pacific for their sponsorship.
Makanidzana urged women to turn out in their numbers for the one-man tournament.
“We are really grateful to Savannah Pacific for their sponsorship and show of confidence in our administration as well as the game of pool in Mutare in general. We sincerely hope that this relationship will be there for a long time to come.
“In the same breadth, we like to urge women to turn out in their numbers for the second one-man tournament. They should also be aware that we will have a category for women only. They will not play against the opposite sex,” he said.
Although there was no official date yet, indications are that the tournament is likely to be held next weekend at Alley Sports Bar at Max Shopping in Palmerstone, Mutare.
