Panic as bus crashes into vendors market

Post Reporter
CHAOS erupted at Sakubva Bus Terminus this morning when a Lion of Judah bus (AFQ 2601), laden with passengers, lost control and veered out of the terminus, ploughing through the busy vendors’ market area.
When The Manica Post visited the scene, the bus remained stuck at the point where it had stopped. Witnesses reported that the bus had developed brake failure while entering the terminus, causing it to speed uncontrollably through the rank, prompting those in its path to scramble for cover amid loud screams and panic.
The bus is alleged to have travelled nearly 200 metres from the terminus before coming to a halt in the market area usually occupied by illegal fruit and vegetable vendors.
“I just heard people screaming. At first, I didn’t understand what was happening, but when I turned, I saw the bus coming at high speed towards us,” said Mr Prince Mapfumidze, a vendor who operates at the site, adding that the terrifying moment forced them to abandon their ware, fleeing to safety.

Another vendor, Mrs Memory Maimbo described the incident as one of the most frightening experiences she has ever encountered.
“There was noise everywhere, people screaming and calling out to each other to run. The bus was no longer under control. It just came rushing towards us,” she said.
Mrs Maimbo said the area where the bus landed is usually crowded at that hour, raising fears of possible injuries.
“This is where we sell every day. If we’d delayed even for a few seconds, many of us could have been seriously injured or killed,” she said.
Details regarding injuries were still unclear at the time of writing.
