Parliament reaffirms political neutrality amid social media debate

PARLIAMENT has reaffirmed its commitment to political neutrality, stressing that it does not take sides in political matters or engage in commentary or mockery directed at any individual.

The statement follows debate on social media over content associated with Parliament’s online platforms.

In a statement, Parliament said its operations are guided by the principle of non-partisanship in line with its constitutional mandate.

“Parliament operates on the principle of non-partisanship. We do not take political sides, nor do we engage in commentary or mockery directed at any individual,” the institution said.

It said its primary responsibility is to legislate, represent all citizens and exercise oversight in the national interest.

“Our constitutional mandate is to legislate, represent all citizens, and conduct oversight in the interest of the nation as a whole,” Parliament said.

The institution said it remains committed to upholding the dignity, impartiality and integrity expected of Zimbabwe’s legislative arm in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.
