Perfect Cameo win HBL

CAMEO SIGAUKE are the Harare Basketball League champions with a 100 percent record.

The franchise claimed a league and cup double after also winning the Uhuru Cup competition.

However, for a side that is used to scooping everything on offer, the league and cup double is just not enough for Cameo.

Gaffer Langton Kudzayi, whose side won all their 18 league encounters to end the season with 36 points, disclosed that missing out on the national championship and the Bob ‘91 trophy still hurt his charges.

“It’s in our DNA as Cameo, we love to win and win everything,” he said.

“We are all ecstatic that we finally managed to win the league title, our first since the reunification of the league back in 2011. We have had an outstanding season during which we played to the best of our abilities. If you check our statistics, since we came back to the league, we had won everything on offer except the league title and to do so in such a manner was something special.

“I believe we have assembled a very young and exciting team. In Everlisto Pasipamire and the reigning league Most Valuable Player, Agrippa Masvisvi, you have two of the brightest young prospects in the league today.

“Taurai Chitsinde and Eric Banda are seasoned campaigners who have lifted every single trophy in the league countless times and I believe the four of them can take us to more titles and better feats much like they did this past season.”

JBC spoilt what would have been a perfect season for Cameo as they won the national championships and the Bob ‘91 Cup.

“It’s a bitter-sweet taste that JBC left us with this past season. We beat them back-to-back in the league but they beat us when it mattered most.

“All things being equal, we would have loved to win everything on offer and finish undefeated to really stamp our dominance. We have done our review and are fully aware of what we did right and where we went wrong. In the positives, defence was our biggest weapon. We hardly gave any team a free look at the hoop and defended like our lives depended on it. It’s like that old saying; defence is the best form of offence.

“As for our limitations, we went into the nationals without key players and our opposition took full advantage. We lost key players at crucial times and now we will have to work on our conditioning for next season.

“Next year will be a different story. We have targeted yet another unbeaten season, retaining our spoils from this year (the HBA title and the Independence trophy) and most importantly taking back our national league title,” said Kudzayi.
