PJ Moore returns to Queens Sports Club in Irish green

When Peter Joseph ‘PJ’ Moore steps onto the field at Queens Sports Club on Thursday, it will be a homecoming of sorts – but with a twist.

The 33-year-old batter, who made his cricket Test debut for Zimbabwe at this very venue in August 2016, will now return as part of the Ireland squad, ready to face his former team in what promises to be a gripping one-off Test.

Moore’s debut for Zimbabwe was a memorable one, albeit in a losing cause. His gritty 71 off 125 balls against New Zealand announced his arrival on the Test stage, but his efforts were not enough to prevent a heavy defeat. Now, after switching allegiances to Ireland earlier this year, Moore finds himself back at the scene of his maiden Test innings, this time with a point to prove.

The Queens Sports Club holds a special place in Moore’s career. His debut knock remains one of the highest score s by a Zimbabwean debutant at the venue, and his total of 166 runs in that match places him 42nd on the list of most runs scored at the ground in Test cricket. However, this time around, he will be looking to add to that tally in Irish colours.

Moore’s decision to represent Ireland came after a period of reflection on his international future. With Zimbabwe’s Test schedule often limited, Moore sought opportunities to further his career and found a new home in Irish cricket. His inclusion in the Ireland squad has already added depth to their batting line up, and his familiarity with the conditions in Bulawayo could prove invaluable.

Ahead of the Test Moore is likely to feel strange, coming back to Queens Sports Club where he made his Test bow but playing for a different team. He has great memories of his debut here.

Thursday is going to be emotional facing Zimbabwe, but must remain fully focused on contributing to Ireland’s success.

For Zimbabwe, Moore’s presence in the opposition camp adds an intriguing subplot to the series. The Chevrons will be wary of his ability to anchor an innings, particularly on a pitch that tends to favour patient batting. Zimbabwe cricket fan, Themba Siziba acknowledged the challenge.

“PJ is a quality player, and we know what he’s capable of. It’s going to be interesting facing him, but we’re ready for the challenge,” Siziba commented.

Ireland, meanwhile, will be looking to build on their recent progress in Test cricket. Led by the experienced Andrew Balbirnie, the visitors boast a balanced side with a mix of youth and experience.

Moore’s knowledge of local conditions and his recent form in domestic cricket make him a key figure in their plans.

The Test match also marks a significant moment for Zimbabwean cricket, as they continue their efforts to rebuild and compete on the international stage. The Chevrons will be eager to bounce back from their recent struggles and secure a much-needed victory at home.

As the two teams prepare to lock horns, all eyes will be on PJ Moore. His return to Queens Sports Club is not just a personal milestone but also a symbol of the ever-evolving nature of international cricket. Will he rise to the occasion and deliver for his new team, or will Zimbabwe find a way to silence their former teammate? The stage is set for a fascinating contest.

Key Players to Watch

PJ Moore (Ireland): Returning to the venue of his Test debut, Moore will be eager to make an impact against his former team.

Craig Ervine (Zimbabwe): The Zimbabwe captain will be crucial in leading from the front with the bat.

Josh Little (Ireland): The left-arm pacer could pose a significant threat on a pitch that may offer early assistance to the seamers.

Blessing Muzarabani (Zimbabwe): The tall fast bowler will be key to Zimbabwe’s hopes of dismantling Ireland’s batting line up.

The Test begins on February 6, with both teams aiming to start the series on a high. For PJ Moore, it is a chance to write a new chapter in his career – one that began at Queens Sports Club and now takes an unexpected turn.
