THE Logan Cup opening day games were called off as players went on strike over contractual matters.
Zimbabwe cricket players abandoned games because they are not happy with their wages.Games were supposed to start yesterday at Queens Sports Club with Matabeleland Tuskers taking on Mountaneers while in Harare Mashonaland Eagles were due to play Mid West Rhinos.
Some of the franchise players in Bulawayo said they were not happy with the salaries which they had been offered.
“Most of us earn a living from playing cricket and with the offers that were presented, we do not see most of us surviving on such little income,” said one of the players.
The players complained that they are being offered ten times less that last season’s salaries.
“The amount which the Zimbabwe Cricket offered us in our contracts was reduced by almost 10 times and honestly how do they expect us to survive on that,” said one of the players from the visiting team.
A source within administration said that Eliah Zvimba, the secretary-general of the players’ association had a meeting with the ZC and reached a consensus over the players’ grievances.
“The administration met with the players’ representative and the Logan matches which were called off are expected to resume tomorrow,” he said.
Matabeleland Tuskers’ chief executive officer Stanley Staddon also confirmed that the players’ representative had a meeting with the administration and that games would have their first bowling this morning.
“The players’ association representative met with the Zimbabwe Cricket and news from the meeting says that both the abandoned Logan Cup matches are expected to be played tomorrow,” said Staddon yesterday.
