PM praises Zambia

Copper Bullets were crowned champions on Sunday night when they beat favourites Ivory Coast 8-7 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw at the end of extra-time.
Although Christopher Katongo and his men may have done it for their country Zambia, Chipolopolo’s victory had a profound meaning beyond the borders as almost all the countries in the region were doggedly rooted behind them in a show of solidarity.
That explains the reason why there were wild scenes of jubilation across the country well past midnight as soon as TP Mazembe defender Stopilla Sunzu buried the decisive spot kick.
Prime Minister Tsvangirai said the Zambian team should be congratulated for their spirit of resilience and teamwork.
“Indeed, Zambia’s victory in Libreville was an emotional moment not only for the country and its people, but also for those of us in Zimbabwe who share a painful history with our northern neighbours,” he said.
“The victory capped a fine campaign by the brave Chipolopolo boys and that golden cup must deservedly be dedicated to that fine crop of players who perished off the coast of Gabon in that tragic plane crash in 1993.
“For over two hours, I sat glued to my television set and eventually jumped with joy, as I am sure every Zimbabwean did, after the decisive spot-kick capped Zambia’s finest moment in football history.
“On behalf of the Government and the people of Zimbabwe, I wish to express my solidarity and support for the people of Zambia in their happiest hour,” said Tsvangirai.
The Zimbabwe National Soccer Supporters Association also hailed Zambia’s fine display.
ZNSSA president Eddie “Mboma” Nyatanga said Chipolopolo brought pride to the region and challenged the national team to take a cue from the battle-hardened neighbours.
“They have shown the whole region that it can be done. We are so happy for them and we salute their fighting spirit.
“Zifa and the Warriors should take a cue from Zambia and emphasise more on football issues.
“Right now we have the 2013 Afcon qualifiers coming up and we must be prepared.
“We must not only concentrate on Asiagate and forgetting other aspects of the game,” said Nyatanga.
Zanu-PF director of information and publicity Stephen Chidawanyika also congratulated Zambia for winning the African Nations Cup final when they beat highly fancied Cote d’ Ivoire.
Chidawanyika said Zambia had done the Southern Africa region proud and believes their disciplined display came because of the members of the uniformed forces in the team.
He said Zimbabwe should also emulate Zambia by casting their net wide in the selection of the players for the national team instead of mainly focusing on players from Dynamos, Highlanders and CAPS United.
