Deep in the heart of Gwamayaya, Nkayi in Matabeleland North, under Chief Sikhobokhobo, a poetic wordsmith, Mkhululi Nyathi has emerged as a powerful voice for the voiceless.

He refuses to discriminate, especially in his fight against the ills plaguing the community.

Nyathi is a gem that has mastered the demanding artistry of weaving captivating quatrains and ballads, using his craft to evoke powerful emotions. His compositions serve as a healing therapy, helping individuals to process their feelings, understand the world around them and find comfort.

Having received his education at Tsheli primary and secondary schools, Nyathi’s passion for poetry began during his Ndebele Literature lessons. He said he used to volunteer to read Ndebele Language set books and poetry to the class, which significantly honed his poetry skills.

For years, those who have had the privilege of hearing him speak, have encouraged him to put his thoughts to paper and today, his words are reaching a wider audience, further cementing his place in the world of poetry. He is undeniably a poetic treasure, whose work must be preserved as it promotes the rich Ndebele culture. His unique perspective of everyday life has long been admired for its depth and maturity. His profound understanding of the world around him is matched only by the richness of his Ndebele language and insightful commentary.

“My muse lies in the unwavering love and support given to me by those who’ve been touched by my art. The encouragement I receive from everyone introduced to my work is a constant source of inspiration. I’m also deeply grateful to my manager, Gugulethu Nkomo, whose guidance has been instrumental in nurturing my creative talent,” Nyathi shared.

To date, Nyathi’s literary efforts have resulted in the publication of an album containing 19 moving poems. One piece, Silithathe Kumbe Silibisele, has caught the attention of many poetry enthusiasts, resonating deeply with audiences through its themes of ubuntu, perseverance and unity.

Nyathi is working tirelessly to ensure his poetry reaches more people, believing it carries a strong message that stirs various emotions.

“I’m preparing for my inaugural one-man poetry show, which will take place in Johannesburg. The exact date is still to be confirmed, but it will be very soon. To stay relevant in the industry, I’ve partnered with The Movement Noize Productions, a collaboration I’m excited about,” he said.

As a young poet eager to gain recognition in Bulawayo and beyond, Nyathi says he wants to be one of the headliners at this year’s Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo set to take place from September 24 to 27.
