POLICE have assured the nation of tight security during this year’s Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces Day commemorations, saying comprehensive measures have been put in place to ensure all events are held in a peaceful, safe and secure environment.
In a statement, Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba said all Officers Commanding provinces had been directed to intensify security deployments at national, provincial and district commemorations, as well as other public gatherings during the holiday period.
“As the nation commemorates the 2026 Heroes’ Day and Defence Forces Day holidays, the Zimbabwe Republic Police reaffirms its unwavering commitment to ensuring that all commemorative activities across the country are conducted in a peaceful, safe and secure environment,” said Comm-Gen Mutamba.
He said police deployments, patrols, roadblocks, stop-and-search operations and surveillance activities would be intensified to maintain law and order and guarantee the safety of citizens and visitors.
Comm-Gen Mutamba noted that the holiday period coincides with the end of the second school term, urging parents, guardians and school authorities to prioritise the safety of children travelling home.
He also appealed to motorists, passengers and pedestrians to exercise maximum caution and strictly observe road traffic regulations, warning drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.
“Drivers are strongly discouraged from travelling at night unless absolutely necessary as reduced visibility, driver fatigue and stray animals significantly increase the risk of fatal road traffic accidents,” he said.
The Police chief urged members of the public to report reckless driving to the nearest roadblock or police station, providing vehicle registration numbers and the location of the incident.
Comm-Gen Mutamba said the ongoing nationwide operation targeting unregistered vehicles, vehicles without registration plates and those fitted with illegal beacon lights, blue lights and other prohibited fittings would be intensified, with offenders facing arrest and prosecution.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant against offences such as murder, robbery, unlawful entry, theft, stock theft and gender-based violence.
Comm-Gen Mutamba also called on citizens to cooperate with police officers deployed throughout the country and report any suspicious activities, saying public cooperation remained critical in maintaining peace and security during the national holidays.
