MUTIUSINAZITA High School grounds turned into a hive of activity when the G-Tel Buhera South schools soccer tournament got underway last Saturday. Four primary schools — Muchuwa, Devure, Mangwadza and Nyadi — took part in the exciting tournament which was initiated by the Buhera South Member of the House of Assembly, Joseph Chinotimba.

The tournament, which saw the participating schools battling it out for the grand prize of a digital board, projector and 15 G-Tel tablets, was sponsored by G-Tel.

Devure got the better of Muchuwa by a 2-0 margin in the finals.

Nyadi Primary School on the other hand competed against Mangwadza and won 4-0, earning itself the third position behind Muchuwa.

Muchuwa Primary received a digital board, projector and five tablets, while Nyadi got a projector, digital board and one tablet.

Each pupil who participated in the matches received a G-Tel school satchel.

As part of the sponsorship package, three teachers are set to go to Harare for training on how to use the boards and tablets, courtesy of G-Tel.

In his prize presentation speech, Chinotimba vowed that his days of being ridiculed are over following the digitalisation of three schools in his constituency through a project sponsored by G-Tel.

Chinotimba said he had aspirations to see schools in his constituency making it among the top 100 schools in terms of academic excellence.

Said Chinotimba: “I am impressed that this project by G-Tel has been successful in my constituency. People look down upon me saying I did not go to school not knowing that zvangu zvikakwidza ndinogona kutaura chirungu kudarika anhu ese ari pano (when I am serious I can speak English better than everyone gathered here). Fine, I may not be educated, but I know how to look for aid for the development of my constituency. At the end of the day, it is not about being educated, it is about being innovative enough to develop the country.

“My wish is to see people in my constituency excelling in education kuti ini MP wenyu ndirege kusekwazve (so that your MP will cease to be the nation’s laughing stock). Now that there is digitalisation in our community I want to see our schools making it among the top 100 schools in terms of academic excellence.”

Chinotimba also lashed at teachers involved in the leaking of examinations saying he intends to move a motion in Parliament to have those involved thrown in jail.

Competing for these digital boards and tablets were Devure, Muchuwa, Nyadi and Mangwadza primary schools.

Devure Primary School headmaster, Edmore Mukombe, expressed happiness on his school’s success, adding that they were ready to run with the new technology that was introduced at his school.

“I was impressed by the children’s performance and would also like to thank G-Tel for such a project. As a school we are raring to go and one of the classrooms will be transformed into a computer laboratory. We will introduce the computer classes to Grade Seven pupils for a start and as time progresses, the lower grades will be included,” he said.

The G-Tel project which was valued at $50 000 saw Devure Primary School walking away with a digital board, a projector and 15 G-Tel tablets, one of which was said to be for a teacher to be nominated,” he said.
