Poor funding curtails modern referral centre’s construction

At least US$120 million is needed to build the hospital on an already identified site close to the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway. Health officials and the Masvingo provincial leadership proposed its construction about two years ago.
Masvingo provincial medical director, Dr Robert Mudyiradima, said there was no money for the project.
“There is indeed growing need for the new hospital to replace the existing one, which can no longer cope with the demand for health services.
“There is need to expand most of the facilities at the existing hospital and replace some of the equipment,” said Dr Mudyiradima.
Dr Mudyiradima refuted reports that the Masvingo City Council wanted to partner Government in construction of the new hospital.
“Those are just rumours. Council has not officially approached us with an offer. We have heard rumours about that but there is nothing tangible that has come from council,” he said.
When the idea was first made public, the Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Association tried to embark on a fund raising initiative for the new hospital but did not make much headway.
