DURING the liberation war, one of the objectives of the struggle was to spread to the people the reasons for taking up arms through “pungwes” from where songs were composed and used as conveyor belts of the aims and aspirations of the nationalists.
That spirit has not died as music has remained a powerful tool in the conveyance of both political and social messages while in some cases and like any other form, the message can be packaged in a way that its meaning can be subtle.
But that has largely been a Harare thing and so it seems.
And that was before the introduction of Umzingwane District’s DJ Mavusani whose real name is Vusumuzi Moyo who has composed songs that talk about the development and the outstanding work that has been done by the New Dispensation in Zimbabwe.
He is famously known for patriotic hits and says he wishes to raise the flag of the country through music production that shows light on the various developments undertaken by the Government.
DJ Mavusani is the current chairperson of the Zanu-PF youths in Umzingwane District in Matabeleland South. He did his primary and secondary education in Umzingwane District.
After completing his O-level, he proceeded to Bulawayo where he did his A- levels at Sikhulile High School.
“I started off as a DJ in 2010 doubling up as master of ceremonies especially during State functions.
What inspired me to do music was the fact that I used to enjoy history when I was at school especially covering the topics of the First and Second Chimurenga.
“I discovered how music used to encourage our people to have courage and resilience.
I believe that music is serious literature. In fact, it’s communication.
People tend to remember songs more than what they have read.
“I have realised that people are quick to judge our country but they do not really know what is happening here.
A lot of development has been happening but people ignore that and focus on the bad side.
“However, with my music; I would really want people to know that there are great things that are happening in this country.
Through my music I would want those citizens that has also given up on our country to rekindle the spirit of nationalism,” DJ Mavusani said.
His famous track that has attracted positive appraisal called “Baba Vasvika” has been getting a lot of attention from the youth and the old.
DJ Mavusani recently released a track “Intuthuko eZimbabwe” where he mentioned the little known Makorokoro Village in Matabeleland South whose story is set to change after President Mnangagwa visited and launched the Presidential Rural Development Scheme.
The song also mentions various infrastructure development projects that have been carried by the Second Republic.
The track features Talent Mhlanga and Sneke Ncube.
“The track is an appreciation of the scheme that the Government has brought in Makorokoro Village in the Matabeleland South Province.
A lot of youths have benefited from this programme as it has created employment and that that has motivated me to compose the song,” said DJ Mavusani.
He also has another hit featuring Talent Mhlanga that is also gaining popularity among his audience called “VaMnangagwa”.
“Baba Vasvika” is getting a lot of positive feedback in most places where it has been played,” he said.
He added that his wish was to perform his songs around the country and preach the message of development through song.
“I would also like to encourage our youths to love and appreciate our country and to carry the spirit of nationalism and patriotism forward.
“Youths should unite, network and share ideas on how to develop this country.
Youths should help shape the country’s future and they need to be grounded on the issues that affect communities guided by the knowledge that this is our country and we should be proud of it,” said DJ Mavusani.
